We are well and truly on the canal now and arrived in Carcasonne yesterday. After a chilly walk in the ancient city we scuttled back to the boat to escape torrential rain. By 4.00 p.m. it was dark with no sign of clearing so I curled up in a blanket with my book and Simon watched a movie that I know I would have hated, from the sound effects. We have had rain every day and it certainly hasn’t been warm but the canal is beautiful, lined with plane trees and constant birdsong. I’m glad I brought a good raincoat.

I have been trying out a few recipes. My version of the local Cassoulet (also known as ‘brick in the stomach’) is on the recipes page.

We had a lovely hot sunny afternoon in Bram where all the houses are built in a semi-circle, very picturesque.

Every day there has been a small respite from rain so we have had a bike ride to the village of Pezens and walked around old churches.

Carcassone Market

Carcassone Market

To-day we got to the market without getting drenched and braved the wind to have breakfast outside – first time. Fresh baguettes are plentiful and lots of wonderful cheeses.

Oval Lock Near Castelnaudary

Oval Lock Near Castelnaudary only two boats but very windy.

The oval locks are quite tricky to get into especially when accompanied by hire boats on their first day out. We will be glad of visitors to help with the ropes.

A man in a boat next door but one just asked Simon what British boating club we were from – indicating the NZ flag.

Great showers here, I discovered that the shampoo I bought has bits of glitter in it and the shower gel smells like cappuccino.
