We are back in beautiful Narbonne and have been lured into staying a second night. We have been entertained all day by a string of different bands. Our favourite has been the two matelots with a wind up organ. Just up the steps from the quay is a potters’ fair with an extraordinary range of innovative designs and glaze.

The trip down to Port la Nouvelle on the med. was restful and easy. We stopped on the bank by a jazz cafe one night and then cruised on to the Pert through a wild and deserted nature reserve, very few other travellers. The Port is both a huge working port, shipping huge cargoes of timber, gravel and wheat; and a booming tourist resort with a maze of modern apartments arranged around artificial lakes. Siobhan and I got completely lost searching for the tourist office. However the beach was fantastic and on the way home the first night we found a sardine festival with bar b qued sardines and dancing in the square – mainly locals. The next day we biked through the salt marshes to a wild beach with real breakers. We had lots of good swims and then walked back to the main beach for fireworks on Bastille night.

Siobhan and i biked back to Narbonne through the reserve and did a great supermarche buy up on the way in. Lovely to be on the power again and have ice for our gins.

The weather, good company and food and wine continue to go from strength to strength.

Vive la France!
