It has been so hot that cold showers from the hose have been the only way to survive. We are on the power at Homps so hope the fridge will be cold soon. We bought two bottles of frozen water this morning which have been a life-saver – also beautiful garden figs and peaches.

No shops yesterday but we managed a gorgeous dinner with lots of salad and rose wine from the local chateau. it was even too hot to play cards!

We spent two days at Sallele d’Aude because there was a wonderful fete with jousting on the canal and a huge vide grenier (empty your attics) – some very satisfying purchases were made. We bought tickets for an interesting repast which was part of a fundraiser and ate by the side of the canal.

Simon and i visited the Amphoralis – an ancient pottery museum with a re-built working potters’ village, very inspiring.

As we re-joined the Midi we went for a swim in the river – beautiful, clear and cold. Siobhan did the washing in the river and put the clothes to dry in the bushes.

Last night a quiet spot on back below a bird hotel – starlings I think. This morning was a bit cooler and Siobhan and i had a good bike ride before one of the locks broke down and we had a long delay.

On the way to buy groceries I was able to direct two young men to the swimming lake and tell a young woman where the hotel barge was parked in French), there is something very satisfying about traveling to familiar places in the opposite direction.
