We are sitting in Port de Meilhan sur Garonne on a cool cloudy evening, a huge relief after 40deg. yesterday. Siobhan and I biked along the leafy canal and took a few detours along the way to get local fruit and vegetables, tomatoes are one of the specialities of this region. We passed a tiny grey chateau on the hillside and stopped for coffee at a canalside cafe. There is a wonderful look-out, up steps lined with living fences, a panoramic view at the top. We bought delicious cakes from the patisserie and have a turkey roast and eggplant on the bar b q for to-night’s dinner.
Yesterday we went out for a long hot lunch at Le Mijoterie (cooked with love), we felt very sorry for the chef who was cooking most of the mains over a charcoal fire. There was a fluffy cat who sat on one of the chairs and a varied selection of bady behaved dogs. We had a great meal with lots of clod rose and went back to Lady mary for an afternoon nap.
The night before Simon and I were in Mas d’Agenais and walked up steep steps through the ramparts to an ancient village square. It has been incredibly hot until to-day and we are enjoying the coolness and being so close to the river.
We are all feeling more relaxed, playing cards, reading novels and generally having a good time. The rest of the world seems far away. We have been keeping up with NZ news but our French paper turns out to be a week out of date.
