We have had a wonderful week with Liza and Dan culminating in the fireworks show at Carcassonne last night which were truly amazing. We walked up to one of the bridges across the river Aude and stood around for about an hour with thousands of other spectators. It was quite thrilling with a re-enactment of the old city going up in flames. back to the boat afterwards for tea and macaroons with armangnac.

It was a severe to contrast to the rest of the week which has been gentle cruising though little villages along the windy treed canal. We are going down now so the locks are easier and we have all had turns cycling and also biked out for dinner on two occasions. I have only managed to fall over in front of a car once and haven’t broken anything.

Biking home in the almost dark beside the canal after a beautiful meal beside the lock was made even more special by seeing the TGV roar past through fields of sunflowers, we disturbed a few fishers and ducks along the way.

Our stay in Bram was, accidently, timed to co-incide with the market and a wonderful free concert on a peniche with an Algerian singer and dancer who was gorgeous. We had a prime seat balanced on the top of an old stone wall and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We found a vineyard nearby so were able to replenish supplies.

Villeseqaelande was the prettiest stop with a nice picnic table and chairs under the trees and fabulous bread and croissants from the epicerie in the morning. We played cards outside until after dark. The next night we moored on a bank outside a cafe which provided cold drinks and a clean loo. The frogs were amazingly loud, it must be mating season. It was still enough to light candles outside and almost too warm at night.

I resisted buying a border collie puppy from the supermarket to-day – they looked just like Tansy’s pups. We have seen a lot of border collies and a great many very small dogs that get carried everywhere.

Off to Trebes tomorrow.
