Narbonne seems to be the place for new crew to join us, we now have a full boat with Hugo and Ryan in the tender (green tent) and Kassie arrived last night. It is such a beautiful old city, events every night and plenty of markets. We went dancing last night – an eighties band outside a cafe and we found a jazz quartet in a back street. There was a celebration of wine and food with people in all sorts of medieval costumes and a brass band marching around the market and up to the town square – not quite sure what it was all about but very picturesque.
The weather continues to be very hot so lots of trips to the beach, copious amounts of water, and sorbets are in order. Narbonne Plage is very lively with a sea of umbrellas and hoards of little children in the shallows, it is too easy to get sunburnt. The best thing was finding a little stand of palm trees which provided some moving shade, high competition for these spots. No photos as we don’t take anything valuable to the beach, the bus costs one euro.
We made a side trip down to Port La Nouvelle staying on the shady bank for a night each way – great camping spot – and Siobhan and I cycled through the beautiful wild life sanctuary both ways. Port la Nouvelle is highly industrial and quite ugly, lots of camper vans beside the port. The tent is working well although Ryan was woken by the gendarme shaking the tent when we were at Port La Nouvelle. No camping on the street, obviously there are different rules for caravans and camper vans. I rushed out in my nighty to explain that they were not vagrants.
The beaches there are very different, one is wild and windy, the other crowded and still. Clear water and golden sand, impossibly hot underfoot so the cold water is a relief.
It takes over half an hour to walk into the town so it felt like a long haul with a chilly bin full of fresh fish, ice and a fill your own rose. The fishermen loved having their photos taken and we chose the prettiest ones for the barbeque. On the way back down the canal Siobhan and I dropped in on a jazz bank practice and had a drink while we waited for Lady Mary. Cards and mosquitos at night.
We had breakfast at the market this morning (croissant, pan au chocolat, quiche or pizza according to taste) and got for fish for dinner along with fresh figs and white peaches. The neighbouring dogs continue to be very friendly, and hopeful. One of them played ball with Hugo and Ryan and has hidden a tennis ball.
