After a windy trip across the Etang, followed by heavy rain which drenched everything, including Simon’s phone, we docked in Bouzigues. We decided to stay for the week as it is Oyster festival time! The first night it was so cold and wet we had fish and chips inside and felt very sorry for the performers, especially the marching girls, and the stall holders.
The next day brought sunshine although it was still very windy and a few balloons went astray. There was an amazing string of street entertainment, bands, dancing girls, a theatre troupe, performed all day. I bought fresh ginger syrup and a huge ginger root reputed to cure all ills. Simon got some local pastis with herbs at the bottom of the bottle, enjoyed by all the crew except me – I think it tastes like medicine! In the evening we had a degustation of fresh oysters followed by oysters gratined with garlic butter, wine and cheese. We then went to the performance by the troupe ‘Elixir’, all fire and dance and acrobats, very fun and satisfying to watch. Then came the fireworks, we had a splendid view from the boat and they were exceptionally pretty, fired alongside the 1812.
On Monday we had a long hot bike ride in search of the Villa Loupian. We finally found it and so worthwhile. It is an amazing gallo roman site with incredible ancient mosaics, have a look at the site if you are interested. After ratatouille on the boat we went out for a sorbet and cafe.
Wonderful swimming here, deep clear warm water off the quay, we have all had at least two swims a day and there are hot showers in this port. Siobhan and I went for a bike ride through the nature reserve this afternoon and we are going out to dinner to-night as Dave and Siobhan head off to Marseille tomorrow.
