A week in Bezier
It was lovely to be reunited with Lady Mary in Pohile, fewer duck eggs to clean up this year and no ants or rats. We headed down the canal to Colombiers to fill up with water and be on the power for serious cleaning, nicely timed to take advantage of the weekly market.
Dan (Sara’s brother) joined us there and parked his camper van in a nearby car park. We had a lovely time with him and dinner with Antony (Sara’s cousin) and Vincente at Au Laviour, one of the most delicious restaurant’s we’ve found on the Midi Canal.
The seven locks of Fonceranne were a challenge as we hit a tremendous thunder and lightning storm with a hefty crosswind just as we were going in. We all got extremely wet and cold.
On to Béziers where we are staying for the week, Dan parked up on the other side of the port before heading off to Barcelona. This is the best spot for washing the wintering over covers. We are rafted up to a peniche which is for sale as the port is so full, just across from one of the prettiest houses in the area. It has just been sold so we are watching the renovation progress with interest.
Béziers used to be the wealthiest city in France when the region was the main wine supplier so there are some really amazing and beautiful houses, unfortunately, the modern architecture is the same as everywhere else, huge concrete slabs with nothing of interest.
Beautiful skies and sunsets with the stormy weather and incredible smells of jasmine after the rain. Simon watched a big barge turn so delicately that there was literally a centimetre to spare. The hire boats could take some lessons.
I made a lovely meal for Antony and Vincente, such a challenge and a pleasure to make interesting seasonal food en bateau. The cherries and asparagus are in season and there are baby leeks, fennel and celeriac. I cooked fish I had never heard of or seen before and made white chocolate and dark chocolate mousse with strawberries toasted almonds, all turned out well.
