We have had a beautiful four days traveling from Clamecy to Auzerre with our friend Gillian. I have enjoyed having a biking companion and the bike tracks alongside the canal are superb. We saw a sign for a fish farm and made a swift detour hoping for fresh fish for dinner. Three dear little trout were caught and cleaned for us from the writhing fish ponds – like big swimming pools. They also sold trout rillettes (very delicious fish pate). So having got jambon persille (jellied ham with parsley) and white nectarines and fresh bread for our lunch time pic-nic at the medieval town of Cravant, we were very happy. We found a stunning ancient stone laverie (wash-house)Â beautifully restored and visited a salon antiquite (antiques fair) in full swing. The crowning delight was finding Chablis for sale from a lock-keeper to drink with the trout who cooked to perfection on our bar b q.

Simon gave me a fishing rod for my birthday so I am now very keen to catch some dinner myself. We have actually seen people catching fish on this stretch of our trip. Especially by the weirs, some are quite big and we have certainly seen enormous fish in the river.
We are moored just across the river from the cathedral and have just had coffee and croissants while I wait for the washing to finish.
The waterside herons have been joined by grebes and we are now feeding swans as well as the always optimistic ducks.
