We started our canal trip with a walk along the St. Martin canal in Paris. A wonderful evening in Paris with Gillian, because it was the summer solstice there was music everywhere, a different band at each street corner.
We left Paris in the pouring rain and by the time we arrived in Agen (mid way between Bordeaux and Toulouse) the skies had cleared. Lady Mary looked splendid decked in bunting and it was wonderful to be greeted by Dave and Siobhan. We had an evening walk after dinner, wine and much catching up, and after an early night set off on the Canal de la Garonne towards Bordeaux. A leisurely day through the tree lined canal, very few other boats and not too many locks made easy traveling.
I’m sitting in the port of Buzet, a pretty largish village with many vineyards. We have been parked next door to an elderly French couple who breed large black labradors and have two huge well-behaved ones on board. Yesterday we braved a 3 seater, 4 wheeled bicycle contraption with a stripey red awning to visit the Vignerons de Buzet. It was hard work peddling up the hill to get there and terrifying riding back with a case of rose, poor steering and worse brakes, but the wine was good. We nearly set fire to the deck with an excess of duck fat on the bar b q but it tasted wonderful.
This morning we walked around the village, bought roses and vegetables from the market and bread for lunch. It is very quaint and pretty with all the services we could want so we will probably come back to winter over here when we leave Lady Mary in August. Dave and Siobhan will check out the train station, which we think is about 4 K away when they go to visit relatives to-day.
There are great bike tracks, lots of bird life, especially little kingfishers and an abundance of wild and cultivated flowers. The sun is shining, the earth is still, life is good.
