A week ago we were in Béziers where the city was throbbing with La Féria à Béziers; music, dancing, performance food and drink (and probably bulls, which we managed to avoid). It is a huge festival and very exciting to be part of. It was quite a challenge to choose what to do or consume as there was so much on offer. In the morning, on the way to the station, we saw people littered all over the place sleeping in cars, on the grass and even on the footpath. So much life, it was very hard to leave.

We celebrated Lady Mary’s 40th birthday the night before we left after a long day coming down the staircase of ecluses into Béziers. A swim in the river was incredibly refreshing, quite warm and weedy.

Prior to Béziers we went under the Capestang bridge (the lowest bridge on the canal du Midi) without any mishap, although we enjoyed watching another boat lose its umbrella and all the drinks off the table. We had a beautiful meal at a Cave in an enclosed courtyard, exquisite food and one of those vineyards that has been in the same family for generations.

A challenging bike ride the next day – detours because of the dying plane tress being felled and both Hugo and I got punctures. We got picked up by Lady Mary before going through the tunnel which has very poor visibility at the entrance and required much horn blasting.

It is a beautiful part of the canal, windy and peaceful.

So home again in the wet and cold after a lovely night in Paris with Gillian.
